Sir Richard Bishop

Age has only sweetened the work of Richard Bishop and his latest album extends the journey that was begun on Polytheistic Fragments. Again blending the affectations of the Middle East with inflections of American slide blues and fingerpicking but the core of the album is Bishop's exploration of his Lebanese roots. The album contains a few wonderful covers of traditional Lebanese songs mingling with Bishop originals that explore a similar vein and often take inspiration from Egyptian guitarist Omar Khorshid. As with much of the Sun City and Bishop solo recordings; The Freak of Araby tends to envelop you in unknown streets and untouchable cultures that feel lost and safe all at the same time. Bishop continually stakes his claim as one of the most interesting instrumental guitarists working today.
